Weather in Egypt

Egypt has two main seasons, hot from May to October and cool from October to May. Both seasons are characterised by extreme temperatures, which are moderated to some extent by winds blowing in from the north. The larger part of Egypt experiences hot, dry summers, while the Delta and the Mediterranean Coast are relatively humid. Winter is never harsh. Days are sunny, with clear skies, and nights are cold.

Average annual temperatures in Egypt reach a maximum of 37° C (99° F) and a minimum of 14° C (57° F) in coastal areas. In the desert, there is enormous temperature variation in a day. Temperatures soar to a maximum of 46° C (114° F) during daylight hours and plummet to a minimum of 6° C (42° F) at night. It is not uncommon for temperatures in Egypt to drop to 0° C (32° F) in the desert during winter.

Along the Mediterranean coast, annual rainfall averages around 200 mm, decreasing sharply towards the south. Between March and April, intermittent sandstorms occur in various places, depending on the wind direction. This 5-day period is called the Khamsin.
